Is Everything More Important to Marketers?

A recent survey by eMarketer (Marketing Executives Networking Group – MENG - survey titled “MENG Marketing Trends Report 2009”) polled 643 marketing executives in December 2008 about their most important marketing tactics for 2008 and 2009. Their response? Almost everything will be more important in 2008 than 2009.

It seems I’m not the only one having trouble sorting what’s most important in digital marketing.

Years ago I managed Sea Tow, a marine salvage and towing company in Fort Lauderdale. I spent a lot of time offshore, waiting for trouble to call. Sometimes it came in the shape of a tropical squall with rain so heavy you could hardly see your hand extended at arm’s length. There was no way to see ahead. Not even radar could see through the clutter. You couldn’t see the shore, the breakwater, other boats underway. You couldn’t properly evaluate the risks. You simply had to come to a dead stop until the squall cleared and you regained some visibility.

Sometimes digital marketing feels like a perfect squall.
